The site of this project is in the central part of Haining city. The urban structure around the site is well developed with a park in the middle and the Haining library in the west. The project is a compound that consists of three parts: Haining museum, Urban Planning Exhibition Center and City Model Exhibition Hall. While the three parts are connected with each other, each part has its own circulation system and can function independently.
One of the culture identities of Haining is the tide of the Qiantang river. Thousands of people go to Haining to see the tide each year. In order to create the moment of watching tide, a large water area is placed in front of the building. People can sit on the big slope having a view to the water just like watching the tide.
The complexity of the spacial program challenges the design, but it also provides opportunities for creating diverse spaces which will allow people to have special moments. The chrome surface under the cantilever volumes, will emphasize the entrance to the lobbies, while reinforcing the weightless quality of the volumes above.
